Winterize your Garden and Landscape Plants

Sun Nov 4 2007
This week topic at the Leads Unlimited breakfast meeting was How to Winterize your Garden and Landscape Plants. It was presented by one of the memebers, Jody Warshauer of Oasis Gardens in Tucson. Jody is a professional Landsacpe Architect and has been working in Tucson for years. He knows the plants that are commonly used in town and some that shouldn't be. He offered some general information on what to do to get our yards and plants ready for winter temeratures, then answered our questions. Many people had questions on our specific issues.

Jody was able to answer just about every question, he just passed on one specific question about oses which are not his specialty. Each week we have a guest speker who gives a 20 min talk about themselves or their business. This was another interesting talk, and the questions lasted for quite a while as more and more of us got into the conversation.

Pointsetta blooms naturally, so it gets covered to be tricked to bloom at Christmas. Desert Plants respond well to  pruning. Dead foliage makes good insulation for the rest of the plant. Don't use plastic - there is a cloth available, as it is colder under it.

Why does cactus not burst when it freezes? Depends where it's from .If you want color, use annual plants, as only about 5 species have color.

Plant orange trees in spring. Grapefruit trees most hardy, then oranges, then lemons, Plants that look good don't always do well in Tucson.

Can u replant Mesquite trees (Jeff)  Very hard to do, as you must get the fine "hair" roots. Heat will kill plants if you miss a watering cycle. (Mesqut) 2 hrs a day to start.

How far to trim rose bush? (Frank) Trim when it's cold.

Jeff. Ocotillo. If it does not bloom this year, it may well next yr. New roots com frm to bottom of the canes. Best time to plant is now. They like to get wet then dry, so don't use drip system.

Ed. Pesricides? Treat agave, yucca, prickly pair, treat early sping and after monsoon with pre emergent

herbicide, 1 inch below ground. .
